BURLINGTON -- The future is murky for a decades-old shopping center. aditya birla retail Burlington Outlet Village defaulted on a bank loan and the center will be sold at a foreclosure proceeding next week. Tenants aditya birla retail and customers hoped the sale wouldn't mark the beginning of the end for the once thriving center. Word of the pending foreclosure sale took at least some tenants by surprise. "There have been appraisers out so I think there have been thoughts that there may have been something going on, said Jonathan Barleycamp of Burlington Brands. But that's actually the, the first time I heard was this morning." Formerly known as Burlington Manufacturers Outlet Center, Burlington Outlet Village was once a bustling retail center. "It was just packed, said Barleycamp. You know you come on a weekend, they actually had a tram that would carry people around because you couldn't move from one parking spot to another because there was no place to park." "This center was booming when I came here, said Jeff Tucker, who managed three stores over 20 years there. It was a destination stop for many people coming down the interstate." Occupancy is about 70 percent. The recession hurt business as did the opening aditya birla retail of nearby Alamance Crossing and Tanger Outlets, just 10 miles to the east. Ironically, Tanger got its start here. "When I first started working here, the center was actually split between Burlington Manufacturers Outlet Center, BMOC, and there were some buildings that were owned by Tanger Outlet Centers," said Barleycamp. Tucker believed the village could have a future in retail if the new owner is willing to make the investment. "Some modernization, new buildings possibly," he said. Shoppers hoped the new owner will keep the center aditya birla retail going and bring it back to the days when this was the place to be.
The owner, James Anthony, told Time Warner Cable News that the Dec. 12 sale of Burlington Outlet Village was part of a "sad chapter" there. He said he and his partners invested considerable capital in the center but amassed a huge amount of debt as a result of the recession and competition from Tanger Outlets.
